چکیده

The accretion of ≈ 0.1 – 1 M⊙ of material by a neutron star through Roche lobe overflow of its companion or through white-dwarf/neutron-star coalescence in a low mass binary system could be enough to exceed the critical mass of a neutron star and trigger its collapse to a black hole, leading to the production of a short gamma-ray burst (SGRB). In this model, SGRBs would often be found in early-type galaxies or in globular cluster environments, though they could also be formed through stellar-wind accretion in high-mass binary systems of star-forming galaxies. Although the collapse event is likely to be of short (≪ 1 s) duration, afterglow complexity could be produced by neutron decoupling in the fireball and subsequent accretion of the companion remnant, for example, the disrupted white-dwarf core. Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries

In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...

The Lowest-mass Stellar Black Holes: Catastrophic Death of Neutron Stars in Gamma-ray Bursts

Mergers of double neutron stars are considered the most likely progenitors for short gamma-ray bursts. Indeed such a merger can produce a black hole with a transient accreting torus of nuclear matter (Lee & Ramirez-Ruiz 2007, Oechslin & Janka 2006), and the conversion of a fraction of the torus mass-energy to radiation can power a gamma-ray burst (Nakar 2006). Using available binary pulsar obse...

Neutron star binaries and long duration gamma-ray bursts

Cosmological long-duration gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs) are thought to originate from the core collapse to black holes of stripped massive stars. Those with sufficient rotation form a centrifugally-supported torus whose collapse powers the GRB. We investigate the role of tidal locking within a tight binary as a source of the necessary angular momentum. We find that the binary orbit must be no wider...

General Relativistic Binary Merger Simulations and Short Gamma Ray Bursts

The recent localization of some short-hard gamma ray bursts (GRBs) in galaxies with low star formation rates has lent support to the suggestion that these events result from compact object binary mergers. We discuss how new simulations in general relativity are helping to identify the central engine of short-hard GRBs. Motivated by our latest relativistic black hole-neutron star merger calculat...

Gamma Ray Bursts from Stellar Collisions

We propose that the cosmological gamma ray bursts arise from the collapse of neutron stars to black holes triggered by collisions or mergers with main sequence stars. This scenario represents a cosmological history qualitatively different from most previous theories because it contains a significant contribution from an old stellar population, namely the globular clusters. Furthermore, the gas ...
